Missionaries Work the Crowd at Univ. of Kentucky Campout for Big Blue Madness Tix

Missionary work

Two figures contrasted with the blue-clad fans camping outside Memorial Coliseum for tickets to UK’s Big Blue Madness. The two young men wore white shirts and thin dark ties. They’d talk to campers outside one tent, then move to another tent.

Justin Mock, 21, and Terry Walker, 20, were on a Mormon mission. For them, the campout for Madness tickets represented a ready audience to hear about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Mock and Walker had been telling the campers about the Mormon faith for about two hours when approached by a reporter.

When asked about the reception they’d received, Mock said, “Wonderful. Very receptive.”

Mock, who is from Wichita, Kan., and Walker, who is from Cedar Hills, Utah, have been in Kentucky long enough to know how basketball can be confused with religious fervor.

Walker summarized Kentucky as “God, basketball and Daniel Boone.”

Not necessarily in that order.
